Text keywords
Last updated September 26, 2026
When you follow a channel by text, Crossline sends you what people post there, and anything you text back posts in that channel under your name (in an announcements channel, it goes to the organizers instead). A few words are keywords instead of messages. This page lists every one of them, what it does, and where its limits are.
- JOIN
- LEAVE
- STOP
- START
- HELP
- NAME
- PAUSE
- RESUME
- QUIET
- STATUS
- MORE, WEEKLY, DAILY, ALL
- EVENTS, REMIND, SKIP, YES, NO
- LINK, UNLINK
How a keyword is read
- A keyword has to be the whole text.
STATUSis a keyword;status update from the trailis a message and posts in the channel. - Case does not matter.
join,Join, andJOINare the same. STOP,START, andHELPalso count with a period or exclamation mark after them, soStop.opts you out and is never posted as a message.- To post a message that happens to be a keyword, start it with a period or a quote mark:
.statusposts.statusin the channel, period and all. - Most keywords get a confirmation text, up to 10 an hour. Past that the keyword still works but no confirmation comes that hour, and
LINKsends no code. The first STOP is always confirmed. While an admin has texting turned off, only HELP and START are answered.
| Keyword | What it does |
|---|---|
| JOIN | Follow the channel this number carries. YES does the same. |
| LEAVE | Stop following. JOIN brings you back any time. |
| STOP | Opt out of every text from Crossline, on every number. Only START from your phone undoes it. |
| START | Opt back in after STOP. |
| HELP | A short reminder of the keywords and the support address. |
| NAME Maria | Set the name shown on your messages. |
| PAUSE, PAUSE 3 | Hold texts for a day, or for 1 to 30 days. |
| RESUME | End a pause early. |
| QUIET 10PM 7AM, QUIET OFF | Change or clear your quiet hours. Every phone starts with 10 PM to 7 AM on its own clock. |
| STATUS | Your name and code, whether you are paused, and your quiet hours. |
| MORE | The next part of a digest that did not fit in one text. |
| WEEKLY, DAILY | Get one text a week or one a day instead of more. |
| ALL | Go back to everything the channel sends. |
| EVENTS | Only event texts: announcements, reminders, and changes. |
| REMIND, REMIND ON, REMIND OFF | Reminders for the next event, for every event, or for none. |
| SKIP | Skip the name prompt, or stop reminders for an event series. |
| YES, NO | Answer an event announcement. |
| LINK, UNLINK | Tie this number to your Discord account, or undo it. |
JOIN also YES
Follows the channel this number carries. Crossline replies with a confirmation, then asks what name to show on your messages; reply with a name, or SKIP to be shown as Texter and a short code until you set one. The code is not part of your number. You can only join from your own phone: nobody can add you.
Limits. Some channels take followers by approval: JOIN files a request, you get one text saying so, and the welcome comes if an admin approves. A channel can be full, and then JOIN says so and tells the admin. If you are already following, JOIN just confirms it again. If this number used to carry a different group that you followed, JOIN does not sign you up for the new one: the reply names the channel the number texts now, and following it takes that channel's join link.
LEAVE
Stops texts from this channel. Your name is kept, and JOIN brings you back under it; text NAME and a new one to change it. LEAVE is the polite way out; use STOP when you want nothing further from the number at all.
STOP also STOPALL, UNSUBSCRIBE, CANCEL, END, QUIT, and in Spanish ALTO, PARA, PARAR, DETENER, CANCELAR, BAJA
Opts you out of every text from Crossline, on every number and every group you follow. You get one confirmation and nothing else, not even replies to other keywords, until you text START yourself. STOP is handled before anything else Crossline does and works even while the service is paused or having trouble.
START also UNSTOP
Clears a STOP and follows the channel again. Only your own phone can do this; an admin cannot resubscribe you. If you already follow and are not opted out, START changes nothing and is answered at most once every ten minutes. On a number that used to text for a different group, START clears your opt-out but does not join you; use the new group's join link.
HELP also INFO
Texts back the keywords and a link to this page. It is answered every time, whatever else is going on, because carriers require it. For anything this page does not cover, email support@crossline.stream.
NAME Maria
Sets the name that appears on your messages, in the channel and on other phones, as [Maria]:. Text NAME followed by the name. The same rules apply to the name you give after JOIN.
Rules. A name that breaks one is refused with the reason, and your next text is read as another try.
- Up to 20 characters. An emoji or an accented letter counts as one.
- Brackets, colons, @, #, backticks, angle brackets, and invisible characters are not allowed. Hyphens and apostrophes are fine.
- At least two letters or numbers. Not a phone number, not a link.
- Not a keyword, not Texter, not Crossline, and not a staff word such as admin, moderator, bot, or support.
- Not the name of a moderator on the server, and not a name another phone in the same channel already uses. Names are compared ignoring case and spacing, so maria and M A R I A are the same.
PAUSE PAUSE 3, up to PAUSE 30
Holds texts from the channel for a day, or for the number of days you give, from 1 to 30. You are still following: you can text to post, keywords still answer, and the texts resume on their own when the time is up. Messages posted during the last day of a pause arrive together when it ends; anything older is dropped rather than sent late.
RESUME
Ends a pause early. If you are not paused it just confirms that texts are on.
QUIET 10PM 7AM QUIET OFF
You have quiet hours from the start. Every phone that joins gets 10 PM to 7 AM on its own clock, without asking for it. Anything posted in that window waits and arrives after it ends, gathered into as few texts as possible. QUIET with two times changes the window, and QUIET OFF clears it so texts arrive around the clock. STATUS shows the hours you have now and the time zone they run in.
How to write the times. Two times, start then end, separated by a space. 10PM 7AM, 10:30PM 6:45AM, and 24-hour 22 7 or 22:30 06:45 all work. A window may cross midnight. Write each time without a space inside: 10PM, not 10 PM. A QUIET the bridge cannot read posts as a message.
Which clock. Your quiet hours run in the time zone your area code belongs to, so a phone from New York is quiet on New York time whichever state the channel is in. If your number is not from where you live, add the zone after the times: QUIET 10PM 7AM PT. Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Arizona, Alaska, Hawaii, Atlantic, and Newfoundland work as ET, CT, MT, PT, AZ, AKT, HT, AT, and NT, or spelled out, and so does a full zone name like America/Denver. The zone stays until you name another.
STATUS
Texts back your name in the channel with your code beside it, whether you are paused, and your quiet hours. The code is how the channel's admins tell members apart, so you can tell them which one is you; it is never any part of your number. While texting is paused for billing or a Crossline review, STATUS says so instead. While an admin has turned texting off, STATUS gets no reply.
MORE, WEEKLY, DAILY, ALL
A channel sends phones either a digest (one text a day, at a time its server picks), a weekly text, or messages as they arrive. MORE sends the next part of the last digest; text it again if that one ends with more. A weekly text has no MORE: its link has every message. WEEKLY or DAILY steps you down to one text a week or one a day, and ALL puts you back on everything the channel sends.
EVENTS, REMIND, SKIP, YES, NO
When a channel has events, YES or NO answers the latest announcement within a day of it (GOING, COUNT ME IN, CAN'T, and NOT GOING work too). Nothing is texted back unless the channel turned confirmations on. REMIND ON gets a reminder before every event, REMIND alone just the next one, and REMIND OFF none. In a live channel reminders are on until you text REMIND OFF; in a digest or weekly channel they are off until you text REMIND or REMIND ON. EVENTS narrows the channel to event texts and nothing else; ALL undoes it. Within a day of a reminder for a repeating event, SKIP stops that series' reminders for you.
LINK, UNLINK
LINK texts you a short code. Run /link with it in Discord, within the time it says, and your number is tied to your Discord account, so your texts and your posts there are one person. UNLINK undoes it.
Anything else you text
A text that is not a keyword posts in the channel under your name. Whether the other phones get it right away or in the channel's daily digest depends on the channel's setting, and a message the server's word filter blocks is not posted. Crossline texts US phone numbers only. A few limits keep one person from flooding everyone:
- A text is cut to about three text messages' worth of characters (a little under 460) with a link to the full post.
- Photos you send are posted in the channel. Other phones see (photo) rather than a link.
- After 10 messages in 10 minutes, your further messages still post but are gathered and texted to the other phones together at the next 10 minute mark. Past 30 messages in an hour, further messages are not posted or texted until the hour is up, and you get one text saying you are sending too fast.
- No phone receives more than 36 text segments an hour from a channel (about a dozen full-length texts); anything over that waits and arrives gathered together.
- Messages that may break carrier content rules are not texted. They stay in the chat, and the author hears once a day how many of theirs were held.
- Advertisements are not texted either: state telemarketing laws treat a marketing text as a solicitation that needs your consent to that business, and you agreed to follow a conversation, not to hear from businesses. An ad stays in the chat, and the author hears the same way.
